The Atlanta Falcons have a new running back. The team has signed free agent Todd Gurley II.
He has signed a one-year deal with the team. He’ll make $6 million from the Falcons during the 2020 season.
Gurley II will also make $7.5 million from the Los Angeles Rams. After an offset of $2.5 million, he’ll make $11 million during the season.
Atlanta was interested in acquiring Gurley II in a trade. But ultimately his contract was too much for a team to risk-taking.
Plus concerns over his knees had teams balking at the idea of adding him. He has had bad knees dating back to his Georgia Bulldog days.
He has not been right since he injured his knees in the playoff run a few years ago.
With this move, he is able to go back home. While he was born in Baltimore, Maryland and went to high school in Tarboro, North Carolina, he attended the University of Georgia.
According to Google Maps, Gurley II will be an hour and a half away from where he went to college with his move.
The Falcons were in need of a running back, as Devonta Freeman was previously released. It’s not clear if Gurley II will be the starting back, or will split carries.
The likelihood is that he’ll split time. He chose the Falcons over the Miami Dolphins and the Tamp Bay Buccaneers.
The 25-year-old Baltimore, Maryland native did not have a single 100-plus yardage game on the season. His worst game of the season was a 16-yardage game on five carries in a 55-40 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His last 100-yardage came in his career came on December 2nd, 2018 in a 30-16 win over the Detroit Lions. He had 23 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the contest.

In his career, he has appeared in 73 games, including 72 starts. He has had 1,265 carries for 5,404 yards and 58 touchdowns.
