Alex Benelas ACC Baseball Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.org) – Louisville freshman third baseman Alex Binelas is the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Florida State sophomore right-hander Conor Grady has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Week after each played a key role in securing ACC Atlantic Division series sweeps for their respective teams.
ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a media panel and are announced each Monday throughout the regular season.
Binelas hit .533 in a 4-0 week for the Cardinals, including seven hits as the Cardinals swept three games at No. 2 NC State to take over first place in the Atlantic Division standings. Four of the Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native’s hits against the Wolfpack went for extra bases.
For the week, Binelas finished 8-for-15 with four doubles, a homer, seven RBI and six runs scored.
After a strong starting outing in Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to rival Florida, FSU’s Grady came back with a stellar relief effort in Sunday’s series finale win over visiting No. 13 Clemson. Grady (6-3) worked a combined 12.1 innings on the week without allowing an earned run while striking out 20.
Grady went seven innings against Florida while striking out a then-career high nine batters and allowing three hits and walking just one. The Tampa native topped himself in the win over Clemson on Sunday, striking out 11 batters while allowing just one hit in 5.1 shutout innings. His 11 strikeouts in a single appearance were the most for a Seminole reliever since Zach Diaz had 12 in 1997.
