In a completely one-sided clash, Georgia Tech dominates the Virginia Military Institute 59-7 on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets were eager to bounce back with an impressive win after coming off a disappointing loss to Syracuse.
Tech’s defense came out hot, stopping the run, forcing a 3 and out on the first drive. Despite that, their offense started slow, with their first two runs stuffed and a deep ball dropped, forcing a punt from inside the 10.
The Yellow Jackets defense would continue to stand strong, delivering a big hit from Ahmari Harvey, forcing a fumble on 3rd down.
The momentum carried on to offense with a strike to the left from Haynes King for 22 yards, followed by a big run from Austin Dean up the middle for 14 yards.
They would cool off with some badly executed plays in the red zone, forcing the Yellow Jackets to settle for a field goal.
VMI would struggle to get anything going on offense throughout the first quarter as their offensive line continued to get dominated.
Tech wasted no time scoring on their next possession. Eric Singleton bolted down the sideline for a 14-yard rush, followed by a screen pass to Malik Rutherford for 35 yards to put their first touchdown on the board in just 2 plays.
Hanye’s king would continue to light up the Keydet’s defense, launching a 50-yard bomb to Eric Singleton. Zach Pyron would later punch it in up the middle for Tech’s second touchdown of the day.
VMI’s luck wouldn’t improve as Aslin Shipe’s rush for 18 yards would get called back for holding as their offense would get pumbled on another drive
Haynes King started right where he left off, firing a strike deep right to Chase Lane for 32 yards. Zach Pyron would again punch it up the middle for an easy 1-yard score.
After stuffing VMI on another drive, Tech would proceed to score at will with a dart from Haynes King to his favorite receiver, Eric Singleton, for his second touchdown of the day.
Tech would score again right before the half, slicing up the defense with a 33-yard reception from Avery Boyd.
The Keydet’s would get dominated throughout the whole 1st half, failing to convert even one meaningful play and being shut out 38-0 going into the locker room.
Tech came out hot in the second half, with Zach Pyron leading the charge on 2 QB keepers getting them into the red zone, and Trelain Maddox with an easy 2-yard run up the middle for another score.
VMI’s offense remained stagnant, starting the half with another 3 and out.
The Yellow Jackets kept their foot on the gas as Leo Blackburn streaked down the sideline for another score on a screen pass.
The Keydet’s finally get some offense going with a crucial scramble on 3rd down from Brady Hammonds for 14 yards, followed by a bomb deep right to Owen Sweeney for 34 yards. After some short runs, Brady Hammonds completed a much-needed touchdown pass, rolling out to his right for 2 yards to put VMI on the board for the first time, but the surge was a little too late.
Despite the wide deficit, Tech continued to pile it on, firing a missile from Aaron Philo to Chris Elko for 41 yards, followed by an easy run from Anthony Carrie up the middle for another score.
The Yellow Jackets would steamroll VMI throughout the whole game. “That was a good win for our program,” coach Brent Key said. “It was on our guys to have tunnel vision on doing their job and playing a football game. We want to play a complete game regardless of the scoreboard, regardless of the opponent.” Their athleticism appeared to be too much for the Keydet’s defense as they posted a dominating victory to make them 3-1 on the season.
