Steven Goff of the Washington Post reports that Atlanta United has traded Julian Gressel away to DC United.
According to Goff, the Five Stripes will receive $750,000 in exchange for the German midfielder, but could also receive up to $1 million due to various bonuses.
Gressel was acquired by Atlanta United in the 2017 draft, Gressel went on to win the Rookie of the Year Award. During his three years with Atlanta, Gressel helped the team win three trophies and scored 15 goals and provided 35 assists.
Atlanta United has not confirmed the trade at the moment.
This offseason has seen some fan favorites leave Atlanta, Darlington Nagbe was traded away to Columbus, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez was sold to Tijuana and now Gressel makes his way to Washington.
The German midfielder expressed his desire to stay in Atlanta and hoped to receive a contract extension several times before the end of the 2019 season, that offer never came. The talk of contract negotiations dragged on for months and President Darren Eales and Vice President Carlos Bocanegra said on different interviews that they were having conversations with Gressel’s agent and hoped to offer a new contract.
Last Friday, during his media availability before training, Gressel said that he hoped a resolution would be made soon and that he would no longer comment on his contract status and he would simply let his agent and the club come to an agreement.
With the departure of Gressel, it is expected for Brooks Lennon to take over that position, a player that was signed during the offseason and was given a multiyear contract just days after.
