SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman outside hitter Christine Alcox ripped a kill on match point to finish off her first collegiate double-double and complete a 3-0 road win for North Carolina Central over Savannah State Monday evening.
Alcox blasted 10 kills and totaled season-high marks of 11 digs and five aces as the Lady Eagles prevailed 25-18, 25-14, 25-18. NCCU improved to 3-15 overall and 3-3 in the conference after completing the season series sweep of the Lady Tigers. Savannah State fell to 3-19 and 1-5.
Alcox had her best hitting performance of her rookie season with 10 kills on 19 swings with just four errors for a .316 hitting percentage. The Carrboro, North Carolina, product finished with a match-high 15.5 points, including five aces and one block assist.
Classmate Da’Nesha Miller played in front of numerous fans that made the short trip from Hilton Head, S.C., to watch her play. Miller delivered 10 kills for her friends and family, which matched Alcox for match-high honors.
Junior Whitney White added six kills and five block assists as NCCU posted a .228 team hitting percentage.
Senior setter Paige Phillips contributed 30 assists and junior libero Bree Simmons collected 10 digs.
Freshman libero Leiri Melendez led all players with 13 digs. Fellow rookie hitter Amanda Rullan Vilanova topped SSU’s attack with seven kills.
