GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame senior forward John Mooney has been named the ACC Player of the Week, while Virginia Tech’s Landers Nolley II has been tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Week. ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
Mooney averaged 23.0 ppg, 16.0 reb, 3.5 apg and 1.5 spg in home wins over Howard and Marshall last week and is just the second Division I player to post two games with 18 or more points and 16 or more rebounds this season.
Against Howard, Mooney posted his second career game with 18-plus points, 16-plus rebounds and five-plus assists – a feat that has been accomplished just six times by an ACC player since 2013-14 when Notre Dame joined the league. Three days later against Marshall, Mooney scored a career-high 28 points with another 16 rebounds while adding two assists and two steals.
Mooney is the only player in the current ACC statistical rankings in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding.
Nolley II averaged 25 ppg last week to lead Virginia Tech to a pair of wins. He posted 23 points, six rebounds and three assists Wednesday versus USC Upstate and 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals Saturday against Lehigh.
Nolley II hit 11 3-pointers in the two games, including seven triples against Lehigh, which is the most by an ACC player in a game this season. He went 11-for-19 (.579) from 3-point range. He helped the Hokies to a 4-0 start for the second straight season, which hasn’t happened since the falls of 1981 and 1982.
Nolley II currently ranks second nationally among freshmen in points per game (22.8) behind North Carolina’s Cole Anthony (27.3).
