So many adages and sayings, like greatness, is measured by the obstacles overcome. Character is developed through adversity. Life is not about falling instead how you get up. Face it the Falcons were knocked out last week by the Minnesota Vikings 28-12. The twelve points came in garbage time. Coaches say they like to be tested so they can see what kind of team they have. Adversity can be the glue that binds, 0-2 can be a formula for separation.
Dan Quinn’s response to the teams’ performance
“Last night, I was more
pissed off than I’ve been in a long time, and we’ve had tough losses.
Lot of preparation, buildup, to have that right, sometimes it can feel like an Olympic race, ready to go, false start, false start and you’re out of it before you even get going. Watched it last night when I got home, watched it again this morning and the reason I was so mad is because we didn’t do what we said we were going to do, and we didn’t do what we were capable of doing. The coach in me always wants the 1-0, but if you had to have an 0-1, the teacher in me said, you’d better apply the lessons.
This week they face the Philadelphia Eagles one year removed as Super Bowl Champions and favorites for the game by 2 points according to the oddsmakers. They will surely be tested even if they haven’t studied and we all know what happens if you don’t prepare for a test. After some of the craziest trades seen in the NFL, Deshaun Jackson has returned home picking up where he left off flying high with two fifty-plus yards touchdown receptions to be instrumental in a 33-27 victory over the Washington Redskins.
Over the past few meetings, the Eagles have held the high scoring Falcons offense to 12 points a game and sacked Matt Ryan nine times. Fletcher Cox the all-pro defensive tackle is salivating with this version of a revamped offensive line. Throw in a new offensive coordinator with limited playtime in the preseason offensively the Falcons were bound to struggle in the first half of the season.
At one point in the game, Ryan had 27 reps, 3 sacks, and 6 pressures that is just plain bad.
With that said the Eagles game plan would be to force them into being one dimensional by stopping the run and forcing Ryan to beat them passing which sounds scary considering the Falcons might have the best receiving core in the NFL featuring recently extended $66 million man Julio Jones, Mohommad Sanu, Calvin Ridley, and Austin Hooper. There is only one major concern can the offensive line provide enough time for the ball to be thrown to them.
The Falcons are facing an ugly 0-2 hole. It’s too early to speak of must-wins, but they must do something positive. It’s their home opener the atmosphere should be wild each time they score the sound of a massive train is alarmed hopefully that will get them back on track.
This game might come down to the leg of Matt Bryant the Falcons all-time scorer who was cut then resigned. I predict him kicking a game-winning field goal to show the Falcons that they gave up on the old man too soon. The beloved fan favorite 44 year old kicker is back and ready to go.
