Georgia Tech the Hungry Underdogs Stunned College Football

The 2024 college football season kicked off in dramatic fashion across the pond, as unranked Georgia Tech pulled off a stunning upset against No. 10 Florida State in Dublin, Ireland. The Yellow Jackets emerged victorious with a final score of 24-21, sending shockwaves through the college football landscape.

If this is any indication of what Brent Key has built at Georgia Tech going into his second full year as the Yellow Jackets head coach. The other team in Georgia could not have had a better start to the season.

Florida State entered the game as heavy favorites, boasting a preseason ranking and the firepower of highly-touted quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. However, Georgia Tech, under the leadership of coach Brent Key, proved they weren’t intimidated by the bright lights.

The Seminoles struck first, marching down the field on their opening possession for a touchdown. But Georgia Tech responded in kind, showcasing a balanced offensive attack that kept the Florida State defense guessing. The Yellow Jackets relied heavily on their ground game, amassing nearly 200 rushing yards, with Jamal Haynes leading the charge with two touchdowns.

While Uiagalelei struggled to find his rhythm throughout the game, the Seminoles never gave up. They clawed their way back in the fourth quarter, tying the score at 21-21 with just over six minutes remaining.

The drama intensified as Georgia Tech took possession, needing a late drive to secure the win. Capitalizing on efficient passing and smart clock management, the Yellow Jackets meticulously moved the ball down the field. With seconds ticking away, kicker Aidan Birr stepped up and delivered the game-winning 44-yard field goal as time expired.

This upset victory marks a significant moment for Georgia Tech and Coach Key. It’s their second win in as many trips to Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, further solidifying their ability to perform under pressure in a big-game atmosphere. For Florida State, the loss throws their season into a state of flux. While the expanded 12-team playoff format offers a glimmer of hope, Coach Mike Norvell will face immediate pressure to get his team back on track.

The Aer Lingus Classic served as a reminder that anything is possible in college football, especially when a hungry underdog collides with a ranked opponent. The Yellow Jackets’ upset lays the groundwork for an exciting season, while the Seminoles must regroup and navigate through a challenging ACC schedule.
