Columbus defeats Atlanta United at the Benz

A goal by Jonathan Mensah in the second half proved to be the difference, as Columbus hands Atlanta United a 1-0 defeat at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The scoring play began off a corner kick taken by Lucas Zelarayan. The short corner was then headed into the second post by Marlon Heirston, in which moment the ball found Mensah and he headed the ball into the back of the net.

With the loss, the Five Stripes will stay at 14 points and below the playoff line. Also, United’s win-less streak continues, as the team last won a match on May 15 against Montreal.

Despite the defeat, Atlanta created several goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match but Columbus goalkeeper, Eloy Room, came away with key saves to maintain his clean-sheet.

After playing three games in seven days and a manager change, Atlanta will now get some must needed rest and will play its next match until Friday, July 30, at Orlando City.

Another thing to note, is that one of the biggest moments of the match came off the field, when people on social media started to share images of rapper Kanye West, inside the supporters section. Kanye performed his new album, yet to be released, in front of fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Thursday night.
