ATLANTA — Thanks to a penalty by Jeff Larentowicz in the second half, Atlanta United defeated FC Dallas 1-0 Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

This was the team’s first victory since Aug. 22, when the team defeated Nashville SC 2-0 in the team’s first match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since March.

The penalty was given to the Five Stripes when a handball by FC Dallas was committed inside the 18-yard box. The referee did not originally called the penalty but after a VAR review, he awarded the kick to Atlanta.

It was then when Larentowicz stepped up to the spot and successfully scored the penalty, his first since Sept. 11 in 2015.

In the first half, Atlanta came out and out performed FC Dallas, as the team dominated possession of the ball and found themselves in the opponent’s end of the field. Unfortunately for the Five Stripes, the team came up short of finding the back of the net, despite having two shots on goal and having had five corner kicks.

Now, Atlanta moves to 14 points in the overall standings, and up to 9th place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Up next, Atlanta will visit Soldier Field when the team will take on the Chicago Fire. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
