Atlanta United wins 1-0, advances to the quarterfinals of CCL

Atlanta United advances to the quarterfinals of the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League after defeating Liga Deportiva Alajuelense 2-0 in the aggregate score in a home-and-away series.

United defeated LDA 1-0, thanks to a goal by Jurgen Damm in the 90th minute during the second leg of the series Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. This will be Atlanta’s third straight appearance in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Five Stripes will now face the winner of the Philadelphia Union/Saprissa series.

The first half of Tuesday’s match played out evenly as Atlanta only had five shots and LDA had three, but neither team had a shot on goal. United did dominate the possession of the ball, finishing the first half with 71.2 percent of it.

Afterwards, the second half played out just like the first half did, but United did pose more of an offensive threat, as the team was able to push forward but the ball just went past of the goal.

With the win, Atlanta stays undefeated in its home matches in its short history of competing in the CONCACAF Champions League. Atlanta will now shift its focus to the start of the 2021 MLS season, with its first match taking place Saturday afternoon at Orlando. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Exploria Stadium.
