Atlanta United Earns First Home Victory

Julian Gressel’s makes lone score for Atlanta United

ATLANTA — The Five Stripes defeated Colorado 1-0 Saturday afternoon, the team’s first victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the 2019 MLS campaign.

In an afternoon where Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened its roof and in front of 43,005 fans in attendance, it was Julian Gressel’s lone goal of the night that helped Atlanta United seal its first three points at home.

The play of the goal was started when Darlington Nagbe stole the ball away from Colorado’s Nicolas Mezquida and then dribbled through two defenders and crossed it over to Julian Gressel, who was able to finish the play by flicking the ball into the net with what looked like the bottom of his right foot.

The goal was scored at the 74th minute and it was also Gressel’s first goal of the season. After Gressel scored, he ran over to the left corner of the field, stood still and stared. When asked about in the locker rooms, he said the celebration was inspired by Damian Lillard’s shot.

“It wasn’t the prettiest but we found a way and that’s all that really matters,” Gressel said about the goal.

In the first half, both teams were unable to create any scoring opportunities as both teams “When teams plays like this, you have to have a fantastic day,” Atlanta United manager Frank de Boer said. “They parked two buses in front of their own goal.“That’s why this victory is very sweet. The team that deserved to win got the three points.”

Towards the end of the game, it looked like “Tito” Villalba would seal the victory as he able to curl his shot from the left side of the field but unfortunately, the ball hit the post of Tim Howard’s goal and the ball was quickly cleared by Colorado defenders.

Atlanta will back in action on May 5th, when the team travels to Kansas City. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m.
