Atlanta United defeats Club America, loses on aggregate score

The Five Stripes defeated Mexico’s Club America 1-0 in the second leg of the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League Wednesday. Despite the victory by Atlanta, the team was knocked out of the tournament after losing 3-1 in the aggregate score, having lost 3-0 in the first leg at Estadio Azteca in March.

The goal for Atlanta was scored by Jackson Conway in the 82nd minute, who just signed a Homegrown contract two weeks ago.

The goal was assisted by George Bello, when he crossed it to the back post and Conway headed the ball into the top corner of the goal.

“I think we asked the group to instill a bit of pride back into the club and they did that tonight no doubt. Playing against a top top team in Club America, who will show that in this tournament, and we were a deserved winner. The guys that made their debuts came on and did really way,” Atlanta United interim manager Stephen Glass said. “Obviously, Jackson Conway comes on and scores with a fantastic, composed finish. Jack Gurr did really well coming on as well. Erik Lopez started the game. We have been waiting a long time at the club to see him, and he provedhis worth tonight and played a part in the team performance.”

This was the second time Atlanta has defeated Club America, having won 3-2 in last year’s Campeones Cup.

With the elimination of Atlanta United, the 2020 year comes to an end and the team will begin its preseason in January of 2021.
